Camp news: 8/9

(from local media reports)

The Rams practiced this morning, and have a practice tonight which is closed to the public, which frankly to me seems shortsighted. The way players are dropping, they're going to need to pull people out of the bleachers. Remember before the draft, when we were all worried about Sam Bradford's shoulder and durability? Hell, by the start of the regular season, he may be the only Ram left standing!

* The injury list:
1 - John Greco, pectoreal.
2 - Keith Toston to my knowledge is still out with concussion-like symptoms.
3 - Justin King, calf.
4 - Ron Bartell, ankle.
5 - C.J. Ah You, hamstring.
6 - Marquis Johnson, knee.
7 - Mardy Gilyard, wrist/arm.
8 - Brandon Gibson, hamstring.
9 - Na'il Diggs to my knowledge is still out with a quad injury.
10 - James Hall, groin.
11 - Jacob Bell, abdominal.
12 - Kevin Payne to my knowledge is also still out due to a quad injury. And yes, his last name is perfect for this team right now.
13 - James Butler, knee. So yes, that's 3/4 of your projected starting secondary on the mend.

Now for today's new or previously unreported injuries.
14 - Adam Goldberg, hyperextended elbow. That does not sound good. Left today's practice.
15 - Kenneth Darby, hamstring. Hurt it Saturday night.
16 - Hank Fraley, unknown. Just resting, hopefully.
17 - Fred Robbins, knee.
18 - Drew Miller, undisclosed. Left practice earlier today.

And the one that is absolutely killing me:
19 - Josh Brown, sore hip. First of all, I don't know what the guy has actually done in camp to get injured. It's not like they practice a ton of kickoffs. Kickers don't do a lot of work in practices. They do a little bit of kicking and stay loose and goof around for a couple of hours. (Which may explain why "real" players tend to hate kickers.) Even worse, the Rams don't have a camp leg. Brown was supposed to do all the kicking in preseason.

Update - it never ends!
20 - Ryan McKee, back. Came out of practice today.

So they've got nearly a quarter of the guys sitting out. And look at some of the "healthy" guys. Steven Jackson, Atogwe, Fletcher, Roger Allen, Daniel Fells, Gary Gibson, Chris Massey, Laurent Robinson, Brooks Foster, all coming off significant surgery and/or season-ending injuries. And Lord help a team that has to count players with lousy career injury histories like Keenan Burton and Craig Dahl among its healthy bodies. Not to mention Donnie Avery.

I don't know if the question should be how many games the Rams are going to win this year or how many they're going to have to forfeit. I sure hope a bunch of these guys would actually be listed as "probable" or "questionable" if this was the regular season. That's still a hell of a long list, though.

* Rare good news! Mike Karney practiced today to become one of the rare 2010 Rams to come off the injury list. Let's call Brooks Foster another of the "survivors"; he'd been listed as hurt but was in the scrimmage Saturday night.
