Camp news: 8/7

CHICAGO - JULY 16: Workers stage a car accident on the Michigan Avenue during the filming of the movie Transformers 3 July 16, 2010 in Chicago, Illinois. Good grief. The St. Louis area has had a couple of major multi-car accidents recently; apparently there was another one on the practice field at Rams Park yesterday. According to Nick Wagoner, 20% of the training camp roster is injured right now. It's enough to make you wonder if they're going to have enough players to scrimmage Saturday night.

The injury list: Chris Hovan's season is over. He was placed on injured reserve and replaced by center Tim Dury, who for now I'm assuming is another rookie free agent profile I've fallen behind on. Dury was with the team during spring OTAs.

James Butler suffered a knee injury and will have an MRI today. I'd be pretty sure he won't be in any on-field activities today. Not a good kick-off to 2010 for Butler, who I don't think was ever all that healthy last season. Update: Butler has a sprained MCL; Steve Spagnuolo today could make no estimate on how long he'd be out other than an "extended" time.

Jacob Bell (abdominal), Brooks Foster (groin) and Kevin Payne (quad) also had injuries at Friday's practice and are described as day-to-day. In that tight, 10-man race at wide receiver, Foster really can't afford much time on the training table after spending 2009 on the IR. Meanwhile, it's been more news during his Rams career that Bell is healthy than it is that he's injured. Hopefully his injury stays a minor thing; neither he nor we want a repeat of 2008.

Others playing hurt since before Friday: Mardy Gilyard (wrist); Brandon Gibson (hamstring); Na'il Diggs (quad); James Hall (groin); Mike Karney (hamstring). They've been playing through their injuries but are also described as day-to-day.

Remaining out at last word: John Greco (pectoreal); Keith Toston (possible concussion); Justin King (calf); Ron Bartell (ankle); C.J. Ah You (hamstring); Marquis Johnson (knee). Darell Scott's participation seems to have increased enough to take him off the list.

Roster move?: Stltoday reports that the Rams have signed offensive lineman Tim Mattran, who was in training camp here a couple of years ago. No move to balance the roster has been mentioned, unless he's really taking Hovan's roster spot instead of Tim Dury. Update: Mattran, not Dury, is the roster addition according to the Rams official roster.

Looks like I'd better bring a notepad to the scrimmage tonight.

Update: Steven Jackson will sit out tonight's scrimmage, along with Jason Smith. Foster and Gibson are not likely to participate. (2nd update: Smith and Foster actually saw limited action.)

Injury update from scrimmage: Mardy Gilyard came out after taking a blow to his already-injured wrist, which is now going to be x-rayed. Kenneth Darby saw little action after re-aggravating a hamstring injury.
