The Rams, through a statement by owner Stan Kroenke, have officially confirmed that head coach Steve Spagnuolo and general manager Billy Devaney have been fired this morning.
Spagnuolo finishes his Rams career with a 2-14 season and a 10-38 record overall.
Distressingly, Josh McDaniels remains under contract for the 2012 season. I already question the judgment of a regime that wouldn't can him after his atrocious performance in 2011. None of the other assistant coaches are being retained as of now, but the new head coach will be encouraged to interview them. McDaniels' is an interesting situation. He has a bunch of players lining up in support, including Sam Bradford, Steven Jackson, Brandon Lloyd and Danny Amendola. He also may very easily have opportunities to OC for the Chiefs or Patriots. I would hope any head coach the Rams hire would have the sense not to get stuck with a blooming idiot at OC and would instead bring in his own man. Otherwise it would be like Spagnuolo keeping Steve Loney, times ten.
More assuringly, Dick Vermeil and Marshall Faulk will be involved in the head coach/general manager searches as part of an advisory committee.
Stan Kroenke's full statement from this morning is up now on the stlouisrams.com blog page.
“I would like to personally thank Steve and Billy for their
dedication to the St. Louis Rams organization over the past several
seasons. This was a difficult
decision for many reasons. We have tremendous respect for Steve and
Billy as people and football professionals. No one individual is to blame for this disappointing season and we
all must hold ourselves accountable. However, we believe it’s in the
best interest of the St. Louis Rams to make theses changes as we
continue our quest to build a team that consistently competes for
playoffs and championships. We wish Steve, Billy and their families the
very best in the future and thank them again for their commitment to our
organization and the city of St. Louis.”
