The Rams tipped their hand that neither Sam Bradford nor A.J. Feeley will be playing Monday night by signing QB Matt Gutierrez to the practice squad Tuesday. Gutierrez was the third-string QB on New England's 18-1 team in 2007. So you know who he played for.
The good news is that Gutierrez has a career QB rating over 104. The bad news is that it's on two passes. The last pass he threw in the NFL was week 7 of 2009 as a Chief. My notes say I saw Gutierrez in a couple of games during the 2007 Preseason Challenge. Played a lot out of the shotgun, decent accuracy, can and will scramble when he has to.
Gutierrez played college ball at Idaho State after transferring from Michigan. He was on the roster of the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL in 2010, apparently backing up Jeff Garcia, who oddly enough was also signed yesterday, by the Texans. He had brief training camp stays this year with the Bears and Redskins, and if the Rams gig falls through, apparently has a job lined up with the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League.
The Rams cut Nate Ness from the main roster in case they need to call Gutierrez up. Gutierrez took the open practice squad position left after the Rams put Tom Brandstater on the main roster last weekend.
