Positives: Very durable, solid worker with some upside. Athletic with a growing frame. Moves fairly well and can block in space. Strong enough to stop defensive ends in their tracks with his punch and leverage. Good hands and hand placement. Impressive run blocker who can wall off defenders. A real mauler; defenders are done once he gets his hands on them. Could be a strong pass blocker with some technique work. Pass protects with good effort and uses his size to carry rushers around the pocket.

Negatives: Lacking in bulk and strength and can get tossed around. Must refine technique. Plays too tall. Stops his feet. Plays back on his heels and crosses his feet to catch up with wide rushers. Poor lateral range, quickness and recovery speed. Weak punch. May be overwhelmed by speed of NFL. Does not understand how to position himself or how to get leverage. Not an aware blocker, will let late rushers into backfield. Played against poor competition. Outbenched at the Combine by several of the small RBs. May have to play inside at the next level.

Compares to: Ryan Lilja.

Fun Facts: Hughes' high school alma mater, Karr High in New Orleans, has also produced NFL players Patrick Surtain and Robert Royal. He had to finish his high school career in Amite, La., 75 miles away, due to Hurricane Katrina.

RamView: Instead of the Cactus Bowl, all of the Rams' scouts seem to have gone to the NFLPA All-Star Game (formerly Texas vs. The Nation Game) this year; Hughes is at least the third UDFA they have signed who played in that game. His size and athleticism got him here; how well he takes coaching in camp will determine how long he stays. Early returns have been positive.
