Former Rams center Rich Saul lost a years-long battle with leukemia over the weekend. He was 64.
Saul anchored the Ram offensive line from 1975-81 and played in more than 200 games for the Rams. He was voted to six consecutive Pro Bowls. Drafted in the 8th round out of Michigan State in 1970, he was the Rams' team rookie of the year. The team voted him outstanding offensive lineman in 1976, and he was a team co-captain from 1979-81.
The epitome of the tough football players of that era, Saul tore an ACL his junior year at Michigan State but finished the game. The Rams made the playoffs every year of the late 70s, and Super Bowl XIV, the franchise's first, keyed by their punishing ground game and punishing offensive line.
Planet Rams has a better biography of Rich Saul than anything I can do here, as does this Rams tribute site. Prayers and condolences go out to his family and friends.
