Path to the Draft, 3/26

Appearing: Paul Burmeister, Mike Mayock, Charles Davis, Brian Baldinger, Mike Lombardi

Team news:
Minnesota at #3: Significant needs at tackle and wide receiver. Nobody talks about it but Mayock believes Justin Blackmon is in the picture here. Could be why Vikings aren't afraid to trade down. Mayock believes they'll still take Kalil, with the major hedge that they'll take the player they have the highest rating on. Well, there's some keen insight.

Cleveland at #4: Mayock now says the Browns should pull the trigger on Ryan Tannehill. Franchise QB trumps all, and Colt McCoy isn't a franchise QB. (Is Tannehill?) With their other 1st-round pick at #22, they can draft the #2 RB, Doug Martin or David Wilson. Davis still doesn't think Tannehill is a top ten pick. They have so many other needs they don't need to reach for a QB this year. Lombardi would take Trent Richardson, but then, second straight team we get the “prediction” of, they should take who they have graded as the best prospect. Such risk-taking on this episode! Baldinger says that in the AFC North, the Browns need to add toughness, so he lobbies for Richardson as well. May be the best player in the draft (Over Andrew Luck?).

Tampa at #5: New coach Greg Schiano is a coach who emphasizes toughness, and they've put together an offensive line capable of dominating run-blocking. Their first priority should be Richardson if Cleveland doesn't take him. And now Mayock calls Richardson “the best position player in the draft”. What, does Andrew Luck not play a position? Richardson's probably the best pass-protecting RB in this year's draft on top of everything else. Lombardi repeats the toughness theme but thinks Tampa should take a defensive tackle. Back to less-than-bold predictions, the Tampa area correspondent comes on later to opine that the Bucs could have a difficult choice between Richardson and Morris Claiborne. Criminy, it's a whole garden maze worth of hedges on today's show.

Rams at #6: Blackmon at #6? Best-case scenario for the Rams. Davis calls it “pre-destiny” or “pre-ordained” if the Rams still get Blackmon after trading down from #2. Actually, it's a pretty freaking brilliant trade by Les Snead. Davis says left tackle is the Rams' next-biggest need, says Rodger Saffold should be moved to right tackle. Baldinger theorizes that the Rams would have to take Matt Kalil if he fell to #6. No argument here.

Buffalo at #10: Didn't we just talk about Buffalo not that long ago? After signing Mario Williams AND Mark Anderson, offensive tackle, where they lost their LT in free agency, is now their biggest need. They could take Reilly Reiff; they could take Jonathan Martin, who protected Andrew Luck's blind side for 3 years and is the intelligent type of player the Bills really go for. Michael Floyd is a dark-horse candidate. Lombardi and Davis agree on LT, most likely Reiff, and that Buffalo can't throw downfield because of their offensive line. Davis also takes a trip to Reach City with the idea of Stephon Gilmore or Dre Kirkpatrick. Can also see Quinton Coples or Luke Kuechly going there. Mayock wouldn't take Reiff, doesn't think he's a prototypical pro LT, at least not right away. He proposes Floyd or Kuechly here, and also heartily endorses Gilmore. Talk about soaring stock.

Chargers at #18: Chargers are kind of gutted at wide receiver, but their correspondent thinks they'll make another vain attempt at drafting an edge rusher. He mentions Courtney Upshaw and, of course, Nick Perry, this year's Earl Thomas who is predicted to be drafted by every team. They also need a strong safety and could take Mark Barron if he slides past Dallas.

Bears at #19: Need to get younger on the defensive side. Want to upgrade over Israel Idonije at edge-rusher with someone like Whitney Mercilus.

Player news:
Stephon Gilmore has emerged as Mayock's #2 cornerback, ahead of Dre Kirkpatrick. Started 40 straight games in the SEC. Former high school QB who understands the game. Long arms, good ball skills, good height (6'0”), no durability issues. Ran 4.4 at the Combine. Mayock thinks he wasn't rated as highly originally because he's a junior and nobody knew much about him. Actually thinks Gilmore is in the same ballpark as Morris Claiborne. Gets a little sloppy in technique and plays too high at times, but has the measurables of a top prospect, and tall, fast corners are hard to find.

Alshon Jeffery has big questions to answer at his pro day. He weighed 216 at the Combine, 15-25 pounds less than it's believed he played at. Mayock thinks he plays with 4.6-40 speed watching him on tape. He'll need to run the 40 faster than that. Most of his catches are contested; he makes them because he's a big-bodied receiver who wins jump balls. He doesn't get separation and won't run away from defenders. If he runs 4.6 or more at pro day, he's locked in as no better than a second-round pick. But even if he does run sub-4.6, his ability to keep his weight down is going to be questioned.

Mark Barron's sports hernia may cause him to miss Alabama's second pro day, but to Mayock he's worthy of a top 20 pick based on his tape alone. Cleanest prospect in the draft at safety.

Mayock has also restored Trent Richardson to top-10 status. Best RB prospect since Adrian Peterson. Tough, fast, excellent pass protector. Pass-catching is his only non-elite skill.

Courtney Upshaw didn't participate in much at the Combine. Needs to have a big workout to show he has explosiveness.

Baldinger gets creative with his mock draft by slotting Blackmon to Minnesota at #3. That makes Matt Kalil a Ram at #6. He believes the Rams would be ecstatic with that outcome. Has Michael Brockers going to Seattle and Dontari Poe not in the top 12. Davis thinks Minnesota would be likelier to take Claiborne if they didn't take Kalil. Also thinks the Poe phenomenon has overshadowed Brockers and hurt Brockers' stock more than it should have. Brockers is closer to being a truly great player now than Poe is. Baldinger continues to ding Poe based on his tape. Calls him a big, talented guy who can't find the football. Mayock says Poe has the motor and freakish athletic ability of Jason Pierre-Paul and will be a star if he gets coached up. He'd take Floyd at 12 over a DT. Baldinger says Poe played a lot more games at Memphis than JPP played at USF and he hasn't seen Poe progress enough.
