Trade the third-rounder

(4/17/07)
It's a shame the Rams can't get Kris Jenkins from the Panthers for a third-rounder. In an offseason where the Patriots gave up a two and a six for Wes Freaking Welker, though, there's no way Carolina gives up a Pro Bowl DT without getting a higher pick back than a three.

It's especially sad the Rams can't get Jenkins for a three because of all the lousy and bizarre third-round picks they've made in St.Louis. Steve McLaughlin. Jerald Moore. Rich Coady. John St. Clair. Brian Allen. Lamar Gordon. Anthony Hargrove. ERIC FREAKING CROUCH. Jon Alston I think got into one game last year.

They also love to spend third-rounders on red-flag character guys. Claude Wroten last year, and Dominique Byrd as well. Byrd now has more arrests than TDs. Richie Incognito had knucklehead credentials but is working out so far.

Leonard Little went in reverse; he got into serious off-the-field troubles after being drafted in the 3rd round. He's the one 3rd-round pick of the St. Louis era to be a major success. I'd call Kevin Curtis a limited success, and I still like Oshiomogho Atogwe's potential.

All in all, though, the Rams' record in St. Louis with third-round picks has been pretty poor. The best thing they can do with the pick is trade it. Odds are, though, their last pick a couple of Saturdays from now is going to be a head-scratcher.
