Rams make roster moves

The Rams have released punter Tom Malone and signed defensive tackle John Gill. Gill is 25, 6'3", 302 and hasn't appeared in an NFL game since 2009. He was a two-time honorable mention all-Big Ten or Twelve in 2007 and 2008 at Northwestern and was originally signed as a rookie free agent in 2009 by the Lions. He had 9 tackles in the final two games of 2009 for the Colts and returned to Indianapolis training camp in 2010, but missed the '10 season while receiving treatment for alcoholism. Indianapolis police found him passed out in a ditch August 8, 2010 but dropped a charge of public intoxication against him. Gill was cut by the Eagles last week after spending three days in their training camp. He had a tackle in Philadelphia's preseason win over the Steelers.

Malone averaged about 20 yards less a punt last week than rookie punter Johnny Hekker; he never had a real chance at winning that job. Hekker should benefit from the extra live work.
